February Workshop 2025
Kate Slaughter returned to us on Sunday 9th of February to lead a workshop that she called "Layers". This was fascinating day where participants replicated the techniques that had been demonstrated to us by Kate the day before and gave us chance a to play with lots of different fibres and materials to make backgrounds for embroidery.
In the morning session the members learnt that there is no such thing as textile waste. We made backgrounds by: cutting up tiny pieces of fabric to make a confetti to fuse between plain fabric and organza; experimented with fibres and used wax crayons to create highlights. After lunch Kate demonstrated how simple stitches can transform a background into a recognisable image and how to use different threads and materials to build textures. We then spent a very relaxing afternoon sewing. Most members managed to finish a vase of flowers and a landscape. Anne had brought an old petticoat to experiment with and proved these that these techniques work with patterned fabrics too.
