Sue Crawley - My Boro and Sashiko Textile Journey
Enrolment 1pm, Speaker 2pm - 4pm

Enrolling for the year will be staggered over two meetings, before and after the speaker presentation. Our speaker in for January is Sue Crawley who will giving her talk on her journey with textiles, how she became a textile artist, starting Sunshine Designs Dollar and her interest in Japanese embroidery techniques. Presentation starts at 2pm.

11 Jan

Join us for a slow stitching workshop inspired by the Japanese textile art of Sashiko and Boro, the tradition of repeatedly mending fabrics. This workshop by Sue Crawley will involve an introduction to Boro, a demonstration of stitches, and guidance on how to create your own Sashiko and/or Boro-inspired art.

Catherine Gowthorpe is a Northumbrian artist who also works in Textiles and is part of the  will show us some examples of her current work in textiles and painting. Explaining how she got to this point in her career, starting in early childhood she will talk about her art education, the people who have influenced her over the years and the development she can see in her work over time.

An illustrated talk on the history of the Wemyss School of Needlework which was founded in 1877. You will learn about its origins, its collection and how the School has evolved from a philanthropic enterprise to teach local girls a skill from which to earn a living to its present operation as a hub for stitchers to source and commission bespoke designs, learn, purchase materials and visit the archive

15 Mar

You will learn the art of canvas work by stitching a Norweave Shell design, a small project designed to be completed in a day, worked in 4 colours. Materials will be provided in the workshop kit.

Laura Brittain is a felt maker. She will give us an overview of wet felt making fro past to present as well as showing us examples of her own practice.
Laura Brittain - How to make a purse or bag
Workshop  10am - 4pm
 Laura will demonstrate how to use a resist to create a small seamless purse or bag and will support students to complete their own unique piece.
Mini Workshop Day
Workshop  10am - 4pm

9 May

A day for crafting together. Either by joining one of the mini workshops led by our own members or working on your own project in the company of others. As always it promises to be a day full of fun and laughter. If you feel you could lead one of this year's workshops please let us know.

13 Jun

Tanya Bentham is a renowned artist and author who specialises in Medieval embroidery. She will be sharing her love of early embroidery, salacious manuscripts and the designs that inspire her. The talk will focus on Laid & Couched, Bayeux and Opus Anglicanum and she will show us her own designs based on these techniques.
Sheila Mortlock - Memory of Place

Sheila's talk explains how a specific place in the Scottish Highlands is very special to her and has inspired the work she has recently produced. Apart from the landscape, it is the history of the crofting traditions of the area which continues to provide inspiration.
Susan Findlay - Memory Bears.
Presentation 2pm - 4pm

10 Oct

Susan's memory bears are made from cloths from a loved one, be it from a baby grow or adult's shirt. She will explain the importance of these objects and how she goes about planning the design.
Alice Elsworth - From Farm to Yarn
Presentation 2pm - 4pm

14 Nov

Alice Elsworth is the brains behind Whistlebare Yarns. She will explain how Whistlebare came about, how it has grown, the joys of owning a herd of goats and how she designs knitting and crochet patterns for her shop and website.
Christmas Lunch
1pm - 4pm

12 Dec

Annual AGM starts at 1pm, followed by Christmas lunch and Challenge presentations.

About the group.

The Border Textile Group meets at Foulden Village Hall 10 times a year. Visitors and new members welcome.
