SUE'S CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE 2024 - INSPIRED BY A FAVOURITE ARTIST.

For this years' challenge Sue thought that creating a textile piece based on work by a favourite artist could be a worthy topic. Participants could be inspired by colour, theme, subject .....anything really. The challenge piece could be 2d or sculptural, and could be classical, modernist or contemporary.....and it didn't have to be finished.

As always no prizes were awarded but there was lots of laughter over the explanations/excuses, we learnt a lot about history and art history and marvelled at the creations of our inventive members. Whether they were items they had made in the past or created specially for the challenge. Well done to everybody who took part.

Annie Started things off

Annie thanked members for their help and revealed the first Challenge exhibit.

Annies "Raymond Briggs".

This time of year "The Snowman" is on the telly but the story is very profound.

Kate: her inspiration Matisse's Snail

Kate showed us a book of works inspired by Artists and Makers that she made many years ago as part of her City & Guilds.

Shirley loves liberty fabric.

Shirley used Liberty pattern fabrics to make a baby's quilt.

Caroline made a kit by Emelia Stitches.

Caroline is a big fan of musical theatre as is the designer behind Emelia Stitches. This kit, one of many she showed us, was based on Phantom of the Opera.

Margaret stitched Charles Rene MacIntosh (CRM).

Margaret is originally from Glasgow and had been a volunteer at the Charles Rene Macintosh (CRM) museum so his work was an obvious choice.

Enid was inspired by Gustav Klimt.

Enid used Klimt as her inspiration recreating the floral effects and motifs he used in stitch. Klimt was a good friend of CRM and much inspired by the Glasgow Girls.

Sue's CRM proving the back is as good as the front.

Sue, who set the challenge, quilted the rose motif that is associated with Macintosh.

Sue unravelled silk sari ribbon, cut it up and then pieced it before quilting the design. She thinks it will become a cushion.

Christine went with CRM's wife - Margaret MacDonnald

Christine chose the often overlooked and very talented wife of Macintosh, Margaret MacDonald, one of the original Glasgow Girls. A fabulous bit of curved piecing and quilting.

Sheena embellished her felted piece .

Sheena thought the felted piece from the Jackie Cardy Workshop in 2022 looked like a Van Gough.

Sheena embellished her felt so it resembled the sky in the "Starry Night" painting.

Jackie wanted to knit a Mondrian

Jackie had planned to knit a Piet Mondrian inspired sweater but her hands let her down. So she borrowed a scarf, her daughter had made, on the same theme.

Sue H gave us lots of information about Turner. ..

As always Sue had lots to tell us about her artist and his painting style so we all learnt something new today.

Sue H has done a wonderful job of capturing the colours of her favourite painting by Turner.

Vanessa was also inspired by Margaret MacDonald.

Vanessa used lots of different styles and media to make her design, just as Margaret MacDonald did in her own works.

Theresa chose Escher.

Theresa was inspired by a book of Escher postcards she has had since art school. She made a long panel, based on tumbling blocks, to go over a glass door.

Once Theresa had mastered tumbling blocks she bent her brain to do a Staircase panel.

Ruth used David Shepard for her stump work

Ruth sent her entry in via Anne W. Its based on a painting of a Bull Elephant by the wildlife artist David Shepard.

Anne W learnt to paint icons in the summer

In the summer, on Lindisfarne, Anne W learnt how to paint icons and mix colours in Tempera. Her design was based on an icon of St. Aidan.

Still a work in progress Anne is using stump work and gold work techniques to make her fabric icon.

Renike's Helen M Stevens design.

Renike was given a kit with this design from a friend in South Africa. She used the finished piece to make a lid for a box.

Joanna's Sunflowers

Joanna used scraps and old doilies to make her version of Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gough.
